The Domaine de l'Aitonnement is first and foremost the story of a forgotten vineyard, that of the village of Aiton, 30 minutes west of Chambéry, in the heart of the Alps. Covering 200 hectares and known for its Mondeuse grapes in the late 1940s, this historic village even had vineyards 300 years ago! The rural exodus and the difficulty of working these steep terroirs (up to 70% slope) led some to abandon this ancestral vineyard.
A young, tenacious and passionate winemaker, Maxime Dancoine, acquired a few hectares in 2016 to restore the noble grapes of Savoie: Jourbertin Noir, Blanc de Maurienne, Mondeuse Grise, and Mondeuse Blanc, in addition to the classic Jacquère, Mondeuse Noire, and Altesse.
The grapes are harvested by hand and vinified naturally, with very little sulfur, all done in biodynamics. A truly fascinating revival for wines of great interest!
