Pierre-Henri Rougeot, the new rising star of murisaltienne!
Magnum of white wine Saint-Romain Combe Bazin 2020, Domaine Rougeot
The Rougeot family is part of the heritage of Meursault, a long dynasty (9 generations!) of winemakers and notables, the patriarch Hubert having been mayor of Meursault for over 20 years and a key instigator of the famous Paulée de Meursault. Pierre-Henri, in his vibrant forties and grandson of Hubert, draws from this heritage while bringing about a great renewal. Passionate about wines since his childhood, he branches out from Meursault to start his professional career as a sales representative for a cooperage, traveling the world to meet winemakers. Through numerous encounters and exchanges over a decade, he hones his tasting skills and affirms the style of wines he loves. Fully back at the estate in 2019, Pierre-Henri succeeds his father Marc and quickly decides to implement his convictions: organic certification, soil work, experimentation with biodynamics in the vineyard, and a gentle winemaking approach, minimally interventionist in the cellar. The major originality lies in his approach to the main input, namely sulfur. Pierre-Henri decided to taste each oak barrel one by one during aging, to decide whether to bottle them without added sulfur or to use minimal sulfur to ensure stability and aromatic clarity. You can thus discover two types of cuvées: the "classic" ones with minimal sulfur, and those without added sulfur. The whites are mouth-watering, racy, and gourmet with a lot of freshness, never heavy. The reds are vinified with whole bunches, fruit bombs that explode on the palate! A breath of fresh air in the heart of Meursault!
This Magnum of Saint-Romain Combe Bazin 2020 from Domaine Rougeot comes from very old vines planted between 1905 and 1925! A true favorite for this wine that combines the concentration from the old vines and the freshness of this steep west-facing terroir. This 2020 is a great success, with a complex nose of toasted bread, pear, and ripe orchard fruits. The palate is impressive, with such density and concentration of fruits! A long finish with just the right amount of acidity to balance the volume in the mouth. A wine far above its appellation... and therefore a magnificent value for money!
