Ardbeg Ten 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky Bottle - Ardbeg Distillery
The Ardbeg Ten is much more than an entry-level whisky: it is the founding expression of a cult distillery, and for many peated whisky enthusiasts, an absolute reference. Founded in 1815 on the Kildalton coast on the Isle of Islay, the Ardbeg distillery has undergone closures and successive acquisitions before being taken over in 1997 by Glenmorangie, which in just a few years restored its legendary status. The distillery uses a highly peated malt of around 50 ppm from the maltings in the village of Port Ellen, and undergoes a long fermentation to refine its phenol content before two successive distillations. Aged in two stages in former American oak bourbon casks — the first imparting the sweetness of vanilla, the second its spicy and peaty character — this 10-year-old single malt is bottled without cold filtration, in the purest tradition of the House. The color is a bright gold with green highlights. The nose is balanced and deep: phenolic, peaty, and smoky from the start, evolving into candied fruits (lemon, grapefruit), iodine and camphor notes, sea spray, before roasting aromas — roasted coffee, tobacco — take the lead. The palate offers a seductive blend of butterscotch and chocolate, cinnamon and phenols, before the deep peat, tobacco smoke, and strong espresso take over, melting into a sweetness of molasses and licorice. The finish is long and ashy, carried by green mint, gentian, ginger, with a retro-olfaction shared between peat, smoke, and white fruits. A whisky of rare depth and balance, voted Best Single Malt in the World by the Whisky Bible in 2008.
