The Domaine de Montille is a wine estate with a rich history. The De Montille family is one of those families perpetuating the Burgundian tradition of great winegrowers' lineages who have preserved their vineyards from generation to generation for decades, without succumbing to external temptations. What is unique here is that the family's winemaking roots date back even before the French Revolution and the expropriation of lands to private individuals. The estate itself was established in the 1730s with the Lords of Commeau. The family home was quickly established in Volnay, at the heart of the Côte de Beaune. It was in 1863 that the estate was named Domaine de Montille. At that time, Étienne Joseph Marie Léonce Bizouard de Montille split his time between his estates in Volnay and Créancey. He was also one of the founders of the Society of Agriculturalists of France. Despite owning a true treasure of over 20 hectares of pinot noir in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, these plots were gradually sold off. When Étienne's grandson took over the reins of the estate, only 2 hectares remained in Volnay.
In the 1950s, significant work was done by Hubert de Montille to build and restore prestige to the estate and its lands. Rather than offering highly technical wines, Hubert de Montille proposed authentic wines, pure treasures of the Burgundian terroir. Gradually, the Domaine de Montille established itself in Burgundy with its traditional wines of strong personality. International renown came with Hubert de Montille, who had a brilliant - dual - career in both law and winemaking. He was one of the first to cease selling to wine merchants and to believe in the future of single vineyard wines and in gentle and patient winemaking. All leading to great wines for aging, with a long and structured finish. Since 1995, his son Etienne has taken over the reins, making key decisions, such as fully certifying the estate in biodynamic practices and returning to whole cluster fermentation, resulting in fine, elegant and silky wines. The estate is now a flagship of the Burgundian wine heritage, with 35 hectares of vineyards, all ideally located.
